Midterm Review

Structure:

1. Multiple Choice Questions –20 (30 points)

a. Self-explanatory!

2. Map – mark 15 locations or features (20 points)

a. You will mark locations on a map or indicate which is which. i.e. I will ask you

to label City or River A indicated on the map, or ask you to draw a circle

around a feature such as a mountain range or a country.

b. We will examine two regions: Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.

c. The questions will be drawn completely from the bank of places and features

listed in the review sheet for Europe and Latin America, use these as your

study guide!

3. Questions, concepts, and definitions . 8 questions, answer 5 (50 points)

a. For this section you should aim to answer 1-2 paragraphs per answer. I

might ask you about interactions between regions, about the general

atmospheric circulation etc.

Review:

Note we will examine everything up to and including the lecture on Europe 2 on February

20.

World Regions in a global context:

Define Human and Physical Geography

Fundamental earth systems processes – plate tectonics (boundary types) and

geomorphology.

Atmospheric circulation.

Difference between weather and climate.

Difference between high pressure and low pressure.

Can you draw a model of the atmospheric circulation? Make sure you can! (2D and 3D)

The greenhouse effect – be able to describe how it works.

Subliminal geometry and omphalos syndrome.

Three waves of European Imperialism and Colonialism, each associated with a different

region.

What is world systems theory? (see reading!) How does it relate to European imperialism?

Mini-systems, world empires, and the world economy.

What is the core/semi-perihpery/periphery model?
